THE O'NEILL WRITER'S CONFERENCE, Artist in Residence,
July 2003.
In July of 2003, I was an artist in residence working on
Theatre for One at The O'Neill Writer's Conference. In order
to share the project with the community, EARLSTREETMAN, by
Courtney Baron, was performed by Michael Chernus, during one
of the conference hours. As time was limited, one person was
chosen from the audience by lottery to go into the booth,
which was placed in the middle of the stage. A camera pointed
at the actor allowed the audience outside the booth to watch
the monologue inside in monitors outside. The Theatre for
One audience member was not filmed, as I believe it is important
that the viewer feel safe enough to have a genuine response
to the performance.
Thank you to all the staff and artists
at the conference that summer, and especially to James Houghton
and Beth Whitaker for the invitation to be there.
